Hope the new year is off to a great start!! It is here! I have been wanting to do this for a very long time and I have finally done it. With the new year comes a new name. Captured Moments by Mel has changed to Melissa Burns Photography!! Changes to the website itself are on the horizon as well. Since my kiddos are all older, one of them old enough to be married, it is time to pursue some new purposes and goals for myself! :) I am on a journey of exploring all the ways I can use this incredible medium to express myself, express ideas and to truly help people. It's so exciting!! I'll keep you all posted on the changes!!! Remember everyone of you can achieve whatever goal or purpose you have for yourself. Persistence pays off!!

It’s All About the Soccer!! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2014/4/It-s-All-About-the-Soccer Two posts in two days!  I know!  Can’t believe either! :)

As I was looking through some old photos the other day, I came across one of my doodlebug playing soccer her first year.  Didn’t know at the time how she’d do or if she would even stick with it.  Here we are 6 years later and she is going strong!  She is one that wants to experience everything, including every sport there is.  However, it always comes back to soccer.  Nothing can interfere with soccer.  My gal has some big goals in this department that I have no doubt she will one day achieve.  So, I thought a stroll down soccer memory lane might be nice.  Hope you enjoy!

The Bond https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2014/1/The-Bond-1 DSC_0249_bwsm

This is probably my favorite shot from a recent photo shoot.  Looking at this image now makes me wonder what they were talking about.  Was she passing along bits of wisdom or just sharing a funny story?   The bond between mother and child is such a strong one.   It’s a bond I’m thankful for every day!!

A Couple of Dogs and a Great Family! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2013/12/A-Couple-of-Dogs-and-a-Great-Family-1 I hope everyone is doing well and getting ready for Christmas!!  It sure did come fast!  We have been covered in ice where I am right now, and I’ve caught myself missing summer and spending the afternoons at the waterpark.  Normally, I LOVE this cold weather this time of year, but being trapped in the house for a few has me daydreaming of warmer weather!  However, before this lovely ice blanketed us, I got to spend a beautiful afternoon with this family!!  I got a little carried away with the picture taking with this group, between having the dogs in the session and the kids enjoying the neighborhood ducks, it made for quite a lot of moments!!

Beautiful Wedding Day https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2013/10/Beautiful-Wedding-Day-1 It was a beautiful October afternoon when they said, “I do!”

Normally I don’t shoot weddings but when asked to do this one, I couldn’t refuse.  I remember getting the call when this gal came onto the scene 20 years ago.  (Not to mention her mom and I have been friends since the 7th grade.)   This beautiful baby grew into a beautiful young woman and met the man of her dreams.  So needless to say it was an honor to capture this special day and be a part of it.

We were afraid it was going to get rained out, but Mother Nature changed her mind and decided to give us a gorgeous day.  The sun was out, the temperature was perfect, and it was time for a wedding!!  Thought I would share some of these moments with all of you!

Long Time Friends! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2013/1/Long-Time-Friends-2 Hello!

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!  We did!  Now it’s on to making 2013 amazing!!

I’d like to share a recent session I shot.  We’ve all been friends since high school.  Our husbands even worked together at the local grocery store back then.  You know it’s pretty incredible to stay close with people for that long.  They have created a beautiful family with 3 gorgeous boys.  To be able to spend the afternoon capturing these guys was an honor!  (It was hard to choose which pics to post. :) )

Live Life!! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2012/12/Live-Life I shared something on Facebook this morning that I would like to share here with all of you. “Good morning everyone! I just wanted to share something this morning. I know we all hugged our kids a little longer or didn’t want to send them to school at all this morning. I’m right there with you. But I realized something. When tragic things like this happen we have to keep moving forward. That’s how we change things. The best way to honor these precious beings is to live life. For all of the scary things we see on the news and read in the newspaper, I promise you there are many, many more great things happening everyday even though we don’t always hear about those. Stop for a moment and look around, you will see it. So in honor of those precious beings today and everday do something nice for someone and live each day to its fullest!!!

Mighty Mud Dash…and Oh Was It Muddy!!! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2012/11/Mighty-Mud-Dash-and-Oh-Was-It-Muddy So it all started one morning my hubby asks me if I want to do a 5k Mud Run.  I look at him like he’s NUTS!!  First off, I’m a little out of shape.  Second of all, MUD…really??!!  I told him I’d have to pass.  My son, however, rose to the challenge!  I wasn’t going to participate but I knew there was no way I was missing this photo op!!!

Turned out to be so much fun!!  My girls and I, my son’s girlfriend, my mother-in-law and her husband all came to cheer them on.  Not very long into it, we all decided we were IN for next year!!  Hope you enjoy the images of the Mud Dash as much as the guys did getting dirty!!

WE DID IT!!!

Now time for clean up!!

Stay tuned for next year! (There might be zombies involved! Zombie Mud Dash)

Getting Into The Halloween Spirit!! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2012/10/Getting-Into-The-Halloween-Spirit Howdy! (As we say in Texas)

I hope everyone is ready for Halloween!  We are!!  We moved into our new house a few months ago and I’ve so been looking forward to the holidays.  To kick off the season we did our traditional pumpkin carving then onto pictures!  I had seen a video post by Brooke Snow http://blog.brookesnow.com/2012/10/22/halloween-photos/ (her site is in my blogroll) about doing photos before Halloween.  Don’t know why I hadn’t thought of it before.  What she said made perfect sense.  By doing this the girls had much more fun playing in their costumes and giggling up a storm.  Now come Halloween, I won’t hear, “Can we just go now, mom?” or “I don’t want to take any more pictures!”.  We can head out and they can collect all sorts of Halloween treats!!!!

We will definitely be doing it this way in the future and maybe get even more creative with our background!!  What fun would that be!!

Happy Halloween to all and be safe!!

What a perfect girls day!!!  Stay tuned for our next adventure!!

Headshots and Music! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2012/3/Headshots-and-Music-1 Hey everyone!

Recently, I had a headshot photo session with a gal who was so much fun!  We spent so much time getting to know each other and laughing that the session flew by so fast.   One of the things I like to tell my clients is to bring their favorite music.  The point of a heashot session or even a portrait session is to capture YOU, which means you need to feel safe and comfortable.  Music helps with that.  We listened to lots of different bands.  (the 80′s were my favorite!)

Here are a few of my favorites and hers too!!  Thanks girl for a great session!!

Headshots in LA https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/12/Headshots-in-LA-1 Hi everyone!  Hope you all are enjoying the holidays with your family and friends!!

I have a surprise guest blogger today.  My hubby!  He’s an actor/writer/producer and he teaches at The Acting Center in Hollywood.  Besides teaching, he does career consultations for actors.  In this article he shares information on headshots that he gives to actors during these consultations.   Thanks!

As a producer, acting teacher, career consultant and actor myself, I know exactly what is needed in a professional headshot that will grab the attention of agents, managers and casting directors alike, in Los Angeles, (or anywhere else), and have been advising actors on how to get this for years.

What constitutes a great headshot is one that captures the actor just being there comfortably.  When an actor is doing their job they are to be the character and live without any attention on the audience that is watching them be that character.  Whether you are in an audition or on a stage or on set, the job doesn’t change.  The actor is simply the character and lives as them.  A great headshot shows that you have the ability to do that by capturing you, just being there, living as you, with different attitudes, without any attention on the fact that you are being photographed.  A headshot like this gives the agent, manager, casting director, producer and/or director the first glimpse that you are able to handle that element of your job, being able “to be,” while others watch.

The headshot photographer that gets my highest recommendation is my wife, Melissa Burns with Captured Moments by Mel.  I don’t recommend her because she is my wife.  In fact, despite the fact that my wife was an award winning and published photographer, I continued to pay other photographers to take my headshots for years.  In the past couple of years I have worked with my wife to help her understand the difference between a great headshot and a great photograph.  While I have no idea how she does what she does from a technical aspect, I was able to help her understand what the finished product of a great headshot was.  She has used this information and her knowledge of camera and lighting to be able to now consistently capture the best headshots I have ever had, and she is now the only photographer I will shoot with as each time we shoot she captures shots that blows my reps away.

An actor needs headshots that cover a range of characters and looks now, so that their reps have options that best match the characters they are submitting your for.  And as you can see from the headshots above, Mel knows how to do that in spades.

Another crucial element in capturing great headshots, beyond the technical, is being able to be comfortable with the photographer so that you can just “be there” while they get the shots.   This is another area in which my wife excels, and not just with me.  One of the things that endears my wife to her friends is that she is a great listener.  She loves people and loves to help them and is extremely good at creating a safe space in which someone can relax and be themselves, and it shows in the headshots.

The last thing that makes Mel the headshot photographer I would recommend at the top, is her price. ;-)  In my opinion, as a producer, acting teacher, career consultant and actor, she is now consistently capturing headshots that are on par with top industry photographers like www.theoandjuliet.com, but only charging $250 per session instead of $800.  This is again because she wants to help people.

With pilot season right around the corner, now is the time to get those great headshots that will blow your reps away and help them open casting doors for you, or to help you get those reps in the first place.  Hit up Mel and get your spot reserved now before she is too booked up, or I talk her into increasing her prices… ;-) )

You can see more examples of Mel’s headshots at http://www.capturedmomentsbymel.com/headshots/

Lee Burns

With pilot season right around the corner, now is the time to get those great headshots that will blow your reps away and help them open casting doors for you, or to help you get those reps in the first place.  Hit up Mel and get your spot reserved now before she is too booked up, or I talk her into increasing her prices… ;-) )

You can see more examples of Mel’s headshots at http://www.capturedmomentsbymel.com/headshots/

A Day at the Beach!! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/12/A-Day-at-the-Beach-1 So, I’ve been on a bit of a quest lately to find out my style of photography.  What I’m realizing is I LOVE to capture “real” moments, hence the name Captured Moments by Mel.  It’s been right in front of me the whole time.  So as I was doing what another photographer, Brooke Snow, suggested, I went looking back through my photos.  These beach photos jumped out at me.  We went the weekend before school started (this was the first and only time all summer).  I asked myself what it was I liked most about these.  I had captured the girls enjoying themselves at the beach.  ”Real” moments with genuine emotion.

Some of these I used both actions and textures, and some I used only actions.  I’ll list where both came from at the bottom of this post.

Textures and actions were used on the ones above.  Textures were from Jessica Drossin Textures.  http://www.jessicadrossintextures.blogspot.com/ and actions from MCP Actions.  (Link below)

Actions from MCP Actions were used on these.  https://www.mcpactions.com/actions/all-actions.html

Thought this little guy was so cute people watching!!

Thanks everyone for reading and I hope you enjoyed these like we enjoyed our day at the beach!!!

Social Media Update https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/12/Social-Media-Update-1 Hi everyone!

Still can’t believe Christmas is almost here!  Time has flown by so quickly.  As a child, I don’t remember the time flying.  As an adult, we have so many more responsibilities and things that snag our time.

Speaking of time, I spent all day last Friday watching an online workshop with Justin Seeley via creativeLIVE.  http://www.creativeLIVE.com  It was Designing with Social Media.   Now I have pages of notes to help me streamline and best utilize my Social Media tools.   There is so much to take advantage of, so many options.  Over the next few weeks I’ll be updating each of my social sites and creating logos and such.  I’m actually very excited.  Honestly, it takes me a bit of time to do the designing portion but I really enjoy it, nonetheless.  If you are interested in hearing what Justin has to say about this, you can go to the creativeLive website.  I believe they have a video of the workshop for sell.

Tell me what are your favorite Social Media sites and why!

RSS Feeds & Reader Made Easy https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/11/RSS-Feeds-Reader-Made-Easy For a long time, the little orange square indicating RSS feeds made me cringe.  What in the world is an RSS feed?  Clicking on it would take me to a screen with a bunch of text that made no sense at all, further confusing me.   How was I supposed to subscribe to a blog when this kept happening?

This is going to be a basic explanation, not a technical one.

An RSS feed goes hand in hand with a Reader.  First, let me explain about the Reader.   It is necessary in order to utilize the RSS feeds.   In a nutshell, the Reader is a place that holds all of your blog and website subscriptions in one location.  It helps cut down on the incoming traffic to your inbox.  Before I learned about the Reader, I had so many emails coming in to notify me that a new blog had been posted.  Now I just have to open up my reader and there is a list of all subscriptions, and any new posts show up on the main page (Google Reader).

Choose which Reader suits you best.  These are a few of the ones out there – Google Reader, Feed Demon, My Yahoo! Reader.  Sign up and download any necessary software.  These Readers are free.

Once you have your Reader opened up, it’s now time to add all of your favorite blogs and websites.  This is where the RSS feed comes in.  RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.  It’s an easy way to sign up for a blog or website.  The symbol for RSS feed or subscription is that little orange box with 3 curved lines.  Some sites have just the 3 curved lines or just say RSS.  Regardless of how it is shown, the same thing applies.

1.  Go to your favorite blog or website.

2.  Find the RSS feed symbol or indicator and click on it.

3.  There are 2 options for subscribing to a site.

a. A screen comes up that asks which Reader you are using.  Find your choice and click

on it.  This will add it to your Reader.

b. If you click to subscribe and a screen comes up with a lot of text that doesn’t make much sense, you will need to subscribe THROUGH your Reader.  (ie.  Google Reader has a         Subscribe button on the upper left of the screen.)  Click on the Subscribe button and type in the URL (ie. www.melissa-burns-photography.com) of the website or blog you’re wanting, then click ADD.  This will add it to your Reader.

4.  Do the above any time you want to add a new blog or site to your Reader.

Now you have all of your blog and website updates all neatly organized in one place!!  Trust me; it makes it so much easier.  I actually read more of them now that they are all together.

Late Afternoon Fun! https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/11/Late-Afternoon-Fun Just wanted to share these photos from a session I had last week.  I’ve known this little gal for quite a few years now.  In the beginning she was very quiet and stuck very close to mom.  Let me tell you during this session, that all has changed!!!  She was so full of life and laughter!!  She even came up with her own ideas of how she thought the session should go.  Soooo cute!!  I definitely had a fantastic time!!  Hope you enjoy her smiles as much as I did!!

Trip to the Pumpkin Patch https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/10/Trip-to-the-Pumpkin-Patch This year has been flying by so incredibly fast.  Halloween is almost upon us, and I realized we hadn’t done anything for the holiday other than buying costumes.  We decided to take a much needed excursion to Lombardi Ranch and visit the Pumpkin Patch.  It was a  perfect way to spend a Fall Sunday morning!  We met some friends there and had a wonderful time!!

The girls shot off through the pumpkins!  They couldn’t decide which ones to pick!

(Pumpkin shaped like a strawberry!)

I think it was best not to get in the car with this dude!!

On the way in or out there was a fruit stand with so many yummy, fresh fruits and veggies!  My favorite were of the funny-shaped gourds!!

All in all it was a wonderful day with friends!!  Thanks guys!!!

What Says Me? https://www.melissaburnsphotography.com/blog/2011/10/What-Says-Me Aloha!  (Love that Flickr always greets in a different language!  My daughter’s 3rd grade teacher does as well!)

Today I decided to share a thought with you instead of photos.  It’s something that has been on my mind a lot lately.  The topic is “personal style.”  Thanks to Facebook, Flickr, WordPress, and the internet in general, I get to see the work of so many different photographers.  Honestly, I am in awe of each and every one of them.  They are creative and inspiring.   A lot of them are not just photographers but they create other things to help photographers be even more creative.  The options are seriously endless, which is very cool!!  Thanks to all of you out there!!!  (Check out some of them on my Blogroll)

That brings me back to my topic, “personal style.”  I’ve realized that while admiring these gifted people, I’ve fallen into the trap of thinking, “I need to be like they are or do what they are doing.”   This is such a flunk on my part.  What I need to do is figure out my style.  Ask myself, “what can I contribute?”  Just think how boring the world would be if everyone did everything exactly the same.   I tell my kids this all the time.  I want them to be who they are and respect that about others as well.  (It’s funny how we don’t always listen to our own advice!)  We all have so much to offer!

In the upcoming blogs, this is what I’m going to be figuring out.  I’ll be asking myself, “What’s my style.”  (whether it be taking photos or editing)  Please feel free to comment on any of these or ask a question.

Remember to BE yourself!  You’ll be glad you did!!!
